Future NHS Leaders Visit Blackwood Manufacturing Facility to Explore Sustainability in Healthcare
Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Public Health Wales Leadership Cohort to our Blackwood manufacturing facility for an inspiring afternoon of learning, discussion and collaboration.
This visit was part of a broader leadership development programme designed for aspiring the next generation of NHS Wales executives who are passionate about making a meaningful impact across the health service. Now, nearing the end of their first year in a two-year programme, these aspiring leaders are already making strides toward shaping the future of healthcare in Wales.
The programme is a designed to equip participants with hands on experience across operational and corporate services including a four week placement with the Welsh Government. Alongside their full time roles, they are also studying for a Masters in Applied Health Leadership, a bespoke qualification developed by designed by Public Health Wales and University of South Wales.
During their time with us, the cohort toured our facility and explored the innovation and sustainability behind our Sharpsafe® and Clinisafe® containers—products that play a vital role in safe clinical waste disposal whilst supporting reducing environmental impact. Used across a; healthcare settings in Wales, Sharpsafe® helps reduce the risk of needlestick injuries.

Jenna Davies, Global Product Manager for Sharpsafe® and Clinisafe®, shared her thoughts on the visit:
“As a UK manufacturer producing sharps containers in South Wales since the 1980s, it’s a privilege to engage with future healthcare leaders. Their insights are invaluable as we continue to evolve our products to meet the sustainability needs of tomorrow’s NHS.”
The visit was coordinated by Claire Monks, who leads the cohort’s development programme. She reflected on the experience:
“Thank you all so much for this afternoon. You were so warm and welcoming, and the trainees really enjoyed. The trainees said there was so much passion from the staff when discussing their work. I am sure we will all think of the fantastic work you are doing every time we are walking the wards in the health boards.”
This visit reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting the NHS through sustainable manufacturing, innovation and leadership development. Engaging with such passionate and forward-thinking individuals reinforces why we do what we do at Vernacare, delivering high-quality healthcare essentials that support everyday clinical practice. The cohort’s curiosity, energy and commitment to driving positive change left us genuinely inspired, and with such dedicated leaders emerging the future of NHS Wales looks incredibly bright.
