What is Gypsum Waste?

Clinical Waste Management

At Vernacare, we are committed to providing a comprehensive and robust clinical waste management solution for all types of healthcare waste - including gypsum. We've now introduced a new 25L gypsum container into our existing range, so let's take a closer look at exactly what is gypsum waste.

What is Gypsum Waste?

In healthcare settings, gypsum waste typically refers to any materials contaminated with gypsum or gypsum-based products that are generated during medical procedures, construction, renovation, or maintenance activities. Gypsum is a mineral commonly used in building materials, such as drywall or plasterboard, and it may be present in various forms within healthcare facilities. Here are some examples of gypsum waste in healthcare:

Plaster Casts and Moulds: Gypsum-based materials are often used in orthopaedic procedures to create casts or moulds for immobilising or supporting injured limbs. Once these casts are no longer needed, they become gypsum waste.

Dental Plaster: Dental offices and clinics use gypsum-based materials, such as dental plaster or dental stone, for making impressions of teeth and oral structures. Waste generated during dental procedures involving these materials would be classified as gypsum waste.

Surgical Plaster Waste: Some surgical procedures may involve the use of gypsum-based materials for woundcare or as part of specialised medical devices.

Laboratory Waste: Gypsum may be present in certain laboratory equipment, such as fume hoods, countertops, or sinks, which are used for chemical analyses, experiments, or sample preparations. Waste generated during laboratory activities involving these materials would be considered gypsum waste.

Why introduce this container?

Through a collaborative relationship with our customers, we welcome feedback across all our product range. A strong message coming from our customers across the NHS and waste handling partners reiterated the need for a 25L gypsum waste container. This need was echoed by Health and Safety departments over concerns that only offering a 50L container resulted in containers becoming very heavy on collection.

A 50L container should only be used in high usage areas as it is replaced often and prevents the risk of overfilling the container. Now, we are able to offer more size options to suit the indiviudual needs of different healthcare settings.
